The New York Times reported in November 2022 that OpenAI’s engineers were somewhat concerned about what they should do next. Should they wait for the completion of the new extensive language model GPT-4, or launch the ChatGPT tool with the unfinished GPT-3 model. Waiting might lead to competitors reaching the market first, but an unfinished model could cause a PR disaster if it didn’t work as desired.

The fear turned into energy when the decision to release GPT-3 was made. ChatGPT was launched on 30 November, and by 4 December, it broke the one million user milestone. And even better was to come. ChatGPT reached one hundred million users just two months after its release, faster than any other app before. With that, we moved into the era of generative artificial intelligence. Now, massive AI models generate text, images, music, moving images, and even 3D models in a way that was not previously believed to be possible for machines.
